Good beers on tap, tasty food. One of the good bars on Augusta. Love their Stella on tap. Have come here many a time, and will return

This will be a confusing review. Been wanting to come check this place out for a while now knowing that they have live music everyday. Had some time to kill before a show so decided to check it out.

Cool little place, felt comfy and friendly with what seemed like regulars occupying the bar area.

Server was friendly, a lovely young lady singing, and our drink order was taken promptly. Then it got weird. Beers took a super long time to arrive even though the bar wasn't too busy. Food order was also taken quickly and took a super long time to arrive. Servers shift was done, we paid and were told a new server would be taking care of us. That never happened.

As our glasses sat empty, the Mr. went up to the bar to grab another round. For some strange reason 2 beers at the bar were almost $2 more than what we just paid. That's not cool.

The nachos were really good (although $4 for the very tiny side of chili was overpriced) beer was cold, but the service was disappointing. For that reason I'm not sure if I will be returning.

Well... Weird little place. Started out well enough... Cool vibe... Live music... Immediate attention from our server... Ordered a couple of beers which seemed to take forever to arrive... Then ordered nachos... Again took what seemed to take forever to arrive... Meanwhile we sat with two empty beer glasses on the table for what seemed an eternity before we were asked if we'd like another... So .. shift change... Paid bill... And again waited with empty glasses for service. Didn't happen so I eventually went to the bar to order drinks. Now here's where it gets even more confusing... The same two beers ordered at the bar cost $2 more at the bar!!! Wtf??

Anyway nachos we're good. Live music good... Ambience good... Service... FAIL

This was the first restaurant I went to when I moved here, and probably my favourite restaurant in Hamilton. The decor is quaint, with British paraphernalia everywhere, including a red telephone booth, and black cat pictures. They have a patio, though o have never been on it, usually opting to watch the hockey game instead, or listen to the live music. The food is traditional pub food. I always get the Queen burger, which is to die for, usually substituting the fries for the soup of the day. My favourite is the broccoli and cheese one. The fried fish is also very good.  Try the dessert of the day- last time I had an absolutely delicious chocolate mud cake. Their breakfasts are traditional but good.  As an extra perk, they also have takeout.

The longer I live in Canada, the more I find myself having a weakness for Britpubs. If only there were more monarchists in this country, man. Add to that that a girlfriend strongly recommended this place to me should I find myself in the Hammer, and the so-trendy place across the street couldn't keep me on their threshold for more than three minutes. (Besides: all they served was sandwiches and pizza.)

Though temptingly Britpubby a dish it is, the Cat and Fiddle's steak and kidney pie that was on special couldn't steer me away from something I go for only rarely: liver and onions.

Oh, shut up, you. I like it. Hated it as a kid, but now I do. So there.

But I also hadn't chowed all day, so an appetizer was in order. Naturally, for me, this meant the small plate of suicide wings. Verdict? A little on the scrawny side but also not overdone. The sauce was thin but plentiful, and they actually, honestly served it with bleu cheese without me having to specially request it. B+.

At first glance, I thought the liver slices were thin, but then I realized how thick the stack was under the perfectly sauteed onion slivers. And bacon. Did I miss it on the menu that bacon was involved? And real bacon, not sprinklybits, and at least four solid, long, tender slabs.

And then came the beef gravy... and not slathered on top of everything, oh no. Served separately in an actual, generously-proportioned gravy boat. I was impressed.

With it all? Steamed veggies (ok, especially when dipped in remaining bleu cheese from the wings) and somewhat lumpy and bland mashed. You might want to opt for the baked tato or fries.

After a day of exploring Dundurn Castle and its museum of British and Canadian military artifacts, enjoying the hearty rations here seemed the perfectly sensible thing to do. The relaxed ambiance was complemented by the crowd of laughing dudes in the dart room, but while other reviewers have remarked about how packed this place gets, during my Saturday early-evening visit, it was just them, myself, and server Nadine. Nice. That the tunage included Sex Pistols and Leonard Cohen didn't hurt.

    I'll be back, eh?
